From Stroke Recovery to Returning to Music - My Neuro Rehabilitation Journey With AI + VR Therapy

By Padma Shri Bombay Jayashri

Music has always been my life, my expression, and my connection to the world. As a vocalist, every performance requires not just voice, but posture, balance, breathing control, hand coordination, and physical endurance.

In March 2023, my life changed unexpectedly.

I suffered a post right MCA aneurysm stroke while I was in the United Kingdom and underwent emergency medical treatment there. The experience was physically and emotionally overwhelming for both me and my family.

After the stroke, even the simplest physical activities became difficult.

Life After Stroke: The Physical Challenges I Faced

Following the stroke, my body experienced severe physical limitations that affected my daily life significantly.

Before Starting Neuro Rehabilitation

I experienced:

  • Severe neck stiffness with restricted neck movement

  • Difficulty sitting or standing for more than 10 seconds

  • Inability to walk comfortably even for a minute

  • Reduced stamina and balance

  • Physical weakness and movement limitations

  • Emotional frustration during recovery

For someone whose life revolves around performing, travelling, sitting for long hours during music practice, and maintaining physical control during concerts, these changes were deeply challenging.

Like many stroke survivors, recovery felt uncertain in the beginning.

Beginning My Rehabilitation Journey at ReWin Health

Later, I was referred to by MERF, Chennai, for structured neuro rehabilitation and stroke recovery support.

At ReWin Health, I underwent:

  • AI-assisted neuro rehabilitation

  • Immersive VR therapy

  • Conventional physiotherapy

  • Balance and gait training

  • Functional movement rehabilitation

  • Structured recovery sessions three times a week for six months

From the very beginning, the rehabilitation experience felt different.

The team approached recovery not just clinically, but compassionately. Every therapist understood that stroke rehabilitation is not only about physical movement — it is also about rebuilding confidence, motivation, and emotional strength

How VR Therapy Changed My Rehabilitation Experience

One of the most unique parts of my rehabilitation journey was the immersive VR therapy.

Traditionally, rehabilitation exercises can sometimes feel repetitive and exhausting. But the VR-based rehabilitation activities at ReWin Health created an entirely different experience.

The virtual reality games kept me mentally engaged throughout the sessions. Instead of feeling like I was repeatedly doing exercises, I genuinely felt involved in enjoyable activities that encouraged movement naturally.

What I appreciated most was that:

  • therapy never felt monotonous

  • the exercises remained engaging

  • movement became more enjoyable

  • the sessions encouraged consistency

  • rehabilitation felt emotionally lighter

The joy of interacting with VR games made the therapy sessions something I looked forward to.

I never felt like I was simply exercising.
Instead, I felt like I was actively participating, learning, and progressing every day.

Gradual Improvements That Changed My Daily Life

Recovery after stroke does not happen overnight. It happens through consistency, patience, and structured rehabilitation.
Slowly, I began noticing meaningful improvements.

After Rehabilitation at ReWin Health

I experienced:

  • Relief from severe neck stiffness

  • Improved and near-normal neck movements

  • Ability to sit comfortably

  • Improved standing endurance

  • Walking confidently

  • Better balance and physical confidence

  • Improved independence in daily activities

One of the most meaningful parts of my recovery was regaining the physical confidence needed to return to my musical journey again.

For an artist, physical recovery is deeply connected to emotional recovery. Regaining movement, posture, endurance, and confidence helped me reconnect with music and performance with renewed gratitude.

The Human Side of Rehabilitation

What stayed with me throughout this journey was the compassion shown by the team at .

The therapists consistently supported me with patience, encouragement, sensitivity, and genuine care throughout the treatment process.

Their dedication made rehabilitation feel less intimidating and more hopeful.

The combination of:

  • AI-powered rehabilitation

  • VR-assisted therapy

  • Conventional physiotherapy

  • Structured neuro rehabilitation

  • Emotional encouragement from therapists

created an environment that supported both physical and emotional healing.

Recovery After Stroke Takes Time – But Every Small Improvement Matters

A stroke can change everyday life suddenly — not only for patients, but for entire families.

When hand movement, walking, balance, or daily activities become difficult, families often feel uncertain about what recovery may still be possible.

At ReWin Health, we encourage families to remember one important thing:

Recovery does not always happen all at once.

Sometimes progress begins with:

  • a stronger grip

  • better balance

  • standing independently

  • opening the fingers slightly

  • or taking more confident steps

These small improvements can have a major impact on confidence, independence, and quality of life.

With structured neuro rehabilitation, consistent therapy, and guided recovery programs, many stroke survivors can continue improving over time.
